Born on May 4th, the animal care staff looked for unique Star Wars themed names

New Bedford, Massachusetts: The Buttonwood Park Zoo welcomed two Canada lynx kittens, one male, one female, on May 4th, 2024, and they finally have names!

“It was clear from the beginning that we would want Star Wars themed names to go along with their May 4th birthday,” said Zoo Director Gary Lunsford. “However, we wanted to think outside the box from the traditional ‘Luke’ and ‘Leia’.”

And think outside they did. Given the kittens’ penchant for hunting and playing, the Animal Care staff chose to name them in honor of their favorite bounty hunters from the Clone Wars animated series – Cad Bane, and Aurra Sing.

Their names were announced on August 10th, during BPZOO’s “International Cat Day” celebration and later released on social media. Cad has been described as slightly larger and slighty braver, while Aurra tends to be slightly more timid.

Since announcing their names in August, animal care staff have been working with Cad and Aurra on various husbandry and training techniques such as target training, to help create voluntary behaviors needed to keep them healthy. Both are growing quickly and are often visible throughout the day in the Lynx habitat, which is located just beyond the bison pasture.
